About Santa Fe

Santa Fe, New Mexico is one of the great destination cities of the world. Whether your group is planning on visiting “The City Different” for an incentive program, business or association meeting or just a get-together, Santa Fe provides an unparalleled experience.

In 1598, Santa Fe was the northernmost settlement along the Camino Real, the " Royal Road" from Mexico City. The city itself was founded as a city of New Spain in 1609 and its official name is “La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Assisi” or “The Royal City of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis of Assisi.” This historic city was designed in the traditional Spanish style around a central plaza, which, by 1829, was the end of the Santa Fe Trail. Santa Fe is the oldest state capital in the country, founded in 1610, and at one time all lands west of the Mississippi were governed from the Palace of the Governors on the Santa Fe Plaza.

Since the 1800's, Santa Fe has been the home of three distinct cultures: Native American, Hispanic and Anglo. The city's architecture reflects these tri-cultural influences. The oldest buildings are made of adobe - a mixture of clay, mud and straw, which is baked in the sun. Many of the structures also have vigas (large pine trees stripped of the branches and bark that support the roof), and latillas (the split aspen or cedar branches forming a cross hatch pattern over the vigas). Much of the modern architecture of Santa Fe is designed in the Pueblo revival style, which incorporates this historic adobe form.

Some Important Facts About Santa Fe

Santa Fe is nestled in the foothills at the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of 7,000 feet. The city occupies 33.4 square miles in a valley above the Rio Grande among mountains that reach to over 12,000 feet. Thousands of acres of National Forest and wilderness surround the city, and yet it is only an hour's drive to the Albuquerque International Airport. Known as the "City Different," Santa Fe supports both historic culture and modern technology, while offering an outstanding quality of life for both young and old.

ALTITUDE & LOW HUMIDITY: Allow your participants time to adjust to the altitude. We suggest that you advise them to refrain from too much alcohol, overeating and strenuous exercise until they have had time to adjust. Hats, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential, even in winter.

Drink plenty of water – it is very dry in Santa Fe and dehydration is a common problem. In addition, extra skin moisturizer and lip balm can provide extra relief.

TEMPERATURE: Santa Fe temperatures can range drastically throughout the day, so a variety of clothing and dressing in layers will prepare you for sudden changes in the weather.
